What to know
Identity and design
Old Tom Morris created the original course; Harry Colt revised the layout, followed by refinements from Tom Simpson and Martin Hawtree. The outer nine turns clockwise and the inner nine anticlockwise.
Playing character and defining features
Changing directions expose players to different wind angles. Visible landing areas and strategic bunkering make placement important rather than simply pursuing distance.
