Royal Melbourne Golf Club West Course

Royal Melbourne West is Alister MacKenzie’s 1931 masterpiece: a walking course built around strategic angles, sweeping landforms, bold bunkers and some of the world’s finest greens. Access is private and must be arranged in advance, usually through a member, reciprocal connection or experienced golf

KNOW THE COURSE

What to know

WHY IT MATTERS

A MacKenzie classic

The West Course is widely regarded as Australia’s leading course and one of the world’s great strategic layouts. Its appeal comes less from brute length than from the quality of its angles, contours and recovery options.

COURSE CHARACTER

Think backwards from the green

Most holes dogleg, and the best tee shot is usually the one that creates the clearest approach—not necessarily the longest drive. Study the pin, identify the safe side of the green, then choose the tee-shot line that opens that angle.

HOW TO PLAY

Use the ground, not just the air

Firm, running approaches are often rewarded. Favor the low-risk side of fairways, accept conservative targets to difficult pins and avoid short-siding yourself on the heavily contoured greens.

  • Tee shots: favor the correct side of the fairway
  • Approaches: use bump-and-run options where available
  • Bunkers: treat them as strategic hazards, not automatic disasters
  • Putting: leave yourself below the hole whenever possible

KEY MOMENTS

Holes to remember

The second is a superb risk-reward par five, the fourth asks for a bold carry over a dune, the ninth is a beautifully defended par four, and the eighteenth demands a precise finish over rolling ground.

VISITOR ETIQUETTE

Arrive prepared

The course is designed to be walked. Wear tailored golf clothing, a collared tucked-in shirt and soft-spike golf shoes; denim, cargo clothing, hoodies and metal spikes are not permitted. Confirm the current visitor rules directly before travel.

ACCESS

Treat the tee time as the trip’s anchor

Royal Melbourne is not a normal public tee-time booking. Secure the West Course invitation or arrangement first, then build flights, hotels and the rest of the itinerary around that date. Do not rely on an online booking page as proof of availability.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

A strong five-night plan

Base yourself in Melbourne’s inner south or near the Sandbelt rather than changing hotels every night.

  • Day 1: Arrive Melbourne; light practice and relaxed dinner
  • Day 2: Kingston Heath or another Sandbelt club
  • Day 3: Royal Melbourne West; allow time for lunch and the clubhouse
  • Day 4: Royal Melbourne East or Metropolitan
  • Day 5: Victoria, Peninsula Kingswood or Yarra Yarra
  • Day 6: Optional Mornington Peninsula finale before departure

TRIP LOGISTICS

Where to base yourself

Melbourne Airport is the practical international gateway, while the Sandbelt is southeast of the city. A rental car or pre-arranged driver is useful for early tee times and moving between private clubs. Add extra time for Melbourne traffic.
