Private coastal championship course · Longgunzhen, Wanning, Hainan, China
Shanqin Bay Golf Club
Shanqin Bay is a spectacular, highly private coastal course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, routed through cliffs, dunes, jungle and valleys. The key planning issue is access: it is not a normal public tee-time course, so secure a member invitation or trusted hosted introduction before booking fligh

COURSE IDENTITY
A wild coastal original
The course opened in the early 2010s and is generally described as an 18-hole, roughly 6,900-yard Coore & Crenshaw design. Published references differ on whether it is listed as par 71 or 72, so confirm the current scorecard with the club.
HOW TO GET ON
Treat access as the trip’s first booking
Plan on playing only as a member’s guest or through a specialist with established club access. Do not book nonrefundable travel until the club has confirmed the named players, date, caddie arrangements and visitor requirements in writing.

Choose angles, not just targets
The fairways can look generous, but the best side of the fairway often matters more than maximum distance. Expect blind shots, firm contours, uneven lies, strong coastal wind and greens that reward imaginative ground approaches.
- Use the caddie’s line and wind read before committing.
- Favor the safe side of the fairway when the approach is partially blind.
- Land approaches short of the hole when the ground can feed the ball.
- Avoid chasing pins on the dramatic cliff and valley greens.
MEMORABLE SECTIONS
Save energy for the finish
The routing moves between exposed coastal holes and quieter inland terrain. The closing stretch is especially unusual, with three short par 4s creating repeated risk-reward decisions rather than a conventional long finish.
- Hole 5: blind, strategic approach around natural terrain
- Hole 11: punchbowl-style green in a hollow
- Hole 13: tee shot played across the entrance road
- Holes 16–18: dramatic short par-4 finishing sequence
IDEAL ITINERARY
Plan four nights, not a quick overnight
Use a four-night itinerary so the trip has breathing room around a private tee time. Keep the arrival and departure days light, and reserve one flexible day in case access, weather or transport changes.
- Day 1: arrive in Hainan and transfer toward Wanning
- Day 2: settle in; light practice or resort day
- Day 3: Shanqin Bay round with caddie
- Day 4: flexible weather day or nearby golf
- Day 5: depart
PRACTICAL PLANNING
Let a local specialist handle the logistics
Because access, transfers, accommodation and domestic connections can change, use a China-based golf operator or trusted host to coordinate the complete movement plan. Confirm the nearest practical airport, road-transfer time, hotel location, payment method, passport requirements and cancellation terms before committing.
