Torrey Pines South Course

Torrey Pines South rewards patience, solid tee shots and smart targets more than aggressive shot-making. Favor the fairway, accept longer approaches and avoid short-siding yourself around the greens.

KNOW THE COURSE

What to know

Off the tee

Choose position over distance

Favor the widest part of each fairway and use enough club to avoid trouble. Driver is useful, but only when it gives you a clear approach and keeps the big misses manageable.

Coastal conditions

Read the wind first

Wind near the ocean can change club selection quickly, especially on exposed holes. Flight the ball down when possible and trust the wind rather than fighting it.

Approach shots

Aim for the safe side

The greens are demanding, so favor the side that leaves an uphill or open chip. When the pin is near trouble, aim toward the center and take your par chance.

Around the green

Play for predictable misses

Avoid short-siding yourself, particularly when the green runs away from the hole. A conservative pitch or bump-and-run is usually better than forcing a delicate flop.

Round plan

Stay patient through the finish

The course can become mentally and physically demanding late in the round. Keep your pre-shot routine simple, commit to conservative targets and treat every hole as a fresh start.
